Arriving in Greenland

Roger M. McCoy

2006

Abstract Moving an Arctic expedition with ninety-eight tons of goods contained in twenty-five hundred crates, bags, boxes, and barrels from Copenhagen to western Greenland required an immense effort. Add to that fourteen men embarking at Copenhagen, picking up three more men and twenty-five ponies in Iceland, and transportation difficulties became enormous. Alfred Wegener planned the entire expedition based on his experience with three earlier trips to Greenland.

He delegated some purchasing tasks to Fritz Loewe and Johannes Georgi, but every detail received Wegener’s attention. He worked as carefully and methodically in expedition planning as he did in his research.
