2024

A selection of some the most common ‘global’ seismic retrofit techniques are discussed in detail. These include the addition of concrete walls, steel frames, supplemental damping devices, base isolation, and removing mass and irregularities. The basis of each technique is described, and then conceptual design examples are provided to support the reader in their understanding of the fundamentals of the technique.

Some of the specific implementation challenges that the engineer should be aware of are identified. The chapter concludes with a high-level overview of the role that foundation performance plays in overall building response and some of the common techniques used to enhance existing foundations.
