Florence Nightingale as a Pioneer of Applied Statistics: Data, Visualization, and the Foundations of Modern Health Care Quality Improvement

Florence Nightingale (1820–1910) is widely recognized as the founder of modern nursing, yet her influence extends into applied statistics, data visualization, and data-driven reform. This conceptual historical analysis reframes Nightingale as an early applied statistician, emphasizing her systematic data collection, analytic reasoning, and innovative graphics to influence health policy and institutional change. Drawing on nineteenth-century developments in statistical graphics and her collaboration with William Farr, the article moves beyond the polar area diagram to examine her broader graphical and tabular toolkit.

It then considers how her mortality data can be reinterpreted using interrupted time-series methods, comparative dashboards, and modern hospital safety analytics, while noting limitations of nineteenth-century data systems. By linking Nightingale’s work to contemporary infection prevention, hospital harm surveillance, and performance dashboards, the analysis positions her as an early architect of data-driven quality improvement and underscores nursing’s longstanding role in evidence-based leadership and systems reform.
