Preparing Junior Software Developers for the AI Era

The pipeline that has historically produced senior software developers is under threat. Nowadays, junior software developers face a paradox: The lack of adequate AI preparation in academia and the replacement of mental effort with generative AI in the classroom may leave young computer science students ill-equipped for current AI-driven realities. At the same time, organizations, seduced by the pace and cost-efficiency of AI coding agents, may stop hiring them altogether.

Without deliberate intervention, the profession risks dismantling the very mechanism that produces its next generation of experts. This article argues that adaptation is imperative to defend the profession of junior software developers across three stakeholders: the junior software developers themselves, computer science educators, and employing organizations. Adaptation will determine whether the next generation of software developers leads the AI era or is displaced by it.
