Abstract This chapter discusses the role of Henry Kissinger and Alexander Haig in preparing the Chinese for Nixon’s February 1972 visit. They try to convince Zhou Enlai that the Soviet Union is embarked on a new aggressive approach, while offering US assistance in case China is threatened. General Haig attempts to enlist Zhou’s help in tricking the US Secretary of State when he arrives with the president.
He also tries to produce a communiqué in advance that will enhance Nixon’s public standing. Mao Zedong finds the offer of American help with the Russians amusing. In Vietnam, General Abrams is anticipating a significant North Vietnamese offensive, which means a successful Beijing meeting is essential for Nixon.
While ordering massive bombing in South Vietnam, the president arrives in China for his mission of peace. He and Kissinger are excited to meet Mao on their first day there. The visit is a TV extravaganza in the United States, burnishing the president’s image.
Meanwhile, their obvious willingness to weaken support for Taiwan infuriates Marshall Green and the State Department.
