Abstract For at least a decade, the late 1950s and all through the 1960s, most discoveries in particle physics were made with a new kind of detector, the bubble chamber, exposed to beams of particles produced by accelerators. The bubble chamber was invented by Donald Glaser who was searching for a track detector adapted to the needs of high-energy particle physics and, only a little later, forged by Luis Alvarez and his group into an indispensable tool.
