Bridge Collapse Analysis: A Comparative Study of Global Failure Patterns and Risk Assessment Based on IABSE Database

Bridge failure, typically associated with significant economic and life losses, is defined as the incapacity of a bridge or its components to perform as specified. The article provides an extensive review of bridge collapses between 1966 and 2022 under the working program of IABSE Task Group1.5 “Performance-Based Design Founded on Lessons from Bridge Failures”, emphasizing the underlying causes and patterns. Statistical analysis highlights emerging trends and risk factors, which vary by region and bridge type.

The findings underscore the importance of standardized reporting systems and region-specific mitigation strategies, providing insights to enhance bridge safety and maintenance practices.
